Plein Air Steamboat 2025

Steamboat in peak fall was unlike anything I’d experienced—brilliant color, fast-moving storms, and a landscape full of energy. I focused on capturing that drama in real time, from shifting skies to a burst of movement as cattle rushed into open pasture—moments that pushed my work toward telling more dynamic, living stories.

PAINTINGS FROM THE EVENT

Coming back to Steamboat with more experience allowed me to approach the week with greater confidence and intention. Instead of figuring things out, I focused on refining my process—making stronger compositional decisions, simplifying shapes, and letting light drive each painting.

That shift opened the door to more complex subject matter, including animals and structures that would have felt out of reach just a year prior. Moments like Greener Pastures—capturing cattle rushing into open land—became opportunities to move beyond static scenes and start building paintings that feel alive and full of motion.
